Nature First
I’m a member of Nature First, the alliance for responsible nature photography. My writing on Shutter Safari is informed by the Nature First Principles, which are a set of guidelines to help people enjoy nature photography while minimising damage to the environment, so that we can all continue to enjoy the places we visit for photography.
I believe that following Nature First Principles can help both the environment and ourselves as photographers, by giving us greater appreciation for the places we visit and ensuring that we protect them for the future.
Below are the Nature First Principles and a description of how I’ve considered them in relation to the work I do on Shutter Safari. If you’d like more information or to become a member of Nature First, check out their excellent website here.

Prioritise the well-being of nature over photography
When I recommend places to visit for photography, I try to always include guidance when a place has become famous through compositions that are only accessible by damaging the environment, breaking rules, or putting yourself in danger. I give realistic assessments of how rewarding photography locations can be if you’re not willing to break the rules or cause harm, so that you can prioritise more sustainable places for photography.

Educate yourself about the places you photograph

When I provide information about photography locations, I always try to include advice about environmental risks, such as fragile plant life or risks to animals.

Reflect on the possible impact of your actions
I always consider - and invite others to consider - environmental and safety risks when writing about places for photography.

Use discretion if sharing locations
I only share detailed information about photography locations that are able to sustain visitors, and I avoid sharing locations with fragile environments or poor infrastructure that makes them difficult or risky to visit.

Know and follow rules and regulations
I always try to include information about specific limitations for each location, including barriers, drone bans, and local rules.

Always follow Leave No Trace principles and strive to leave places better than you found them
Where possible, I’ve included the Leave No Trace principles in my writing and encouraged a wider understanding of these guidelines.

Actively promote and educate others about these principles
Integrating Nature First Principles into my work has been my approach to sharing knowledge, but any effort can make a huge difference. Consider using #naturefirst when you share your own photographs.
