Yeni Cami, Istanbul

There are more than 3000 mosques in Istanbul and Yeni Cami, set back from a square near the river, is one of the largest. Building on it started in the 1500s but, after years of political wrangling and contests, it was not completed until the mid 1600s after falling into ruin and being almost completely destroyed in a fire.

Like all the large mosques, the stacks of domes and shapes make for hours of photography. I took this picture around dusk from the end of a bridge across the road, being careful to avoid the traffic and people all around the bottom of the mosque.
